Consumer Debt Collection Desk

with Coordinated Care and Advice for Legal Servcies (CARPLS)

 

Each day, hundreds people are called to the Consumer Collections Court at the Daley Center to respond to a summons from a creditor.  All these respondents have had a judgment against them in a collections case and are now trying to come up with a plan to pay off the debt.  Once a week, PBN attorneys staff a help desk with CARPLS to provide needed legal advice in how to address this situation.  

Unknown to most debtors, there are some exceptions and exemptions that allow them to withhold some of their income from creditors, making it possible for them to continue supporting themselves and their families.  While they still owe the debt, these options allow them to "get back on their feet" before fulfilling this legal obligation
